The passing of a friend can often serve as a jarring reminder of the fragility and fleeting nature of life. It forces us to consider whether we are truly living our lives to the fullest, and if we are doing the hard things necessary to maximize our limited time. In this article, we explore the hard truths that we must confront in order to build inner strength and achieve true happiness, from accepting life’s changes and trusting ourselves, to living our truth, crafting a daily routine, and making time for the right relationships. We also explore the importance of learning something new and giving ourselves the mental and emotional space to set our minds free. So, let us take a moment to reflect on our lives and honor the memory of those who have passed by committing to living fully in the present moment. Because as Mae West said, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”

“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”— Mae West

The quote above has been a cornerstone of many lifestyles, and it’s been retweeted, posted, and shared countless times. It’s a statement that rings true in many people’s lives, and it’s especially relevant when we consider how our lives can be much shorter than we expect.

Mortality is a brutal reminder that we need to do some pretty difficult things to make the most out of the time we have here. Despite being reminded of our limited time here on Earth, we often get stuck in routine and end up not doing the things that matter. It’s with this mind, that we must understand that we can only live once, so if we want to make it count, we must do it right.

In honor of my close neighborhood friend, Alison, who passed away earlier today, I want to reflect on some things that we can do to make the most out of our limited time.

    1. Don’t be afraid to accept and appreciate life’s changes.

Life is always about change. Sometimes, there are things in our lives that aren’t meant to stay. These changes may not be what we want, but they’re what we need to grow. We need to let go of the past to make room for the present and the future. Holding onto the past may make us feel strong, but it’s only when we let go and embrace new beginnings that we truly become strong.

    2. Don’t be afraid to trust yourself.

Believe in yourself; you’ve come far, and you’ve grown a lot. Appreciate how far you’ve come from where you once were. Give yourself credit for your strength and resilience. Trust yourself to make the right choices to guide your future. Good things take time, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Take a deep breath and trust yourself to move forward.

    3. Don’t be afraid to live your truth.

Be yourself; accept your flaws, admit your mistakes, and don’t hide nor lie. Deal with the truth at every step of the way. Learn from your mistakes, and move forward. You’ll be more powerful and strong if you accept yourself, flaws and all.

    4. Don’t be afraid to craft a daily routine that’s right for YOU.

If you want to live your life to the fullest, you need to live it for yourself. Choose the path that feels right for you, not the one that simply looks good to others. Build your daily routine around what is truly important to you. It’s not what you say, but how you spend your time that counts.

    5. Don’t be afraid to say “no” to unnecessary obligations.

To make room for what matters, you need to prune nonessential commitments and eliminate as many distractions as possible. The most successful and peaceful people are those with the ability to sort “somewhat” important things from vital ones.

    6. Don’t be afraid to give yourself enough mental and emotional space.

Don’t overthink things. Your biggest limitations are often the ones you make up in your head. Stop overthinking everything, clear your mind, and let your hopes shape your future. Find space to set your mind free.

    7. Don’t be afraid to make more time for the right relationships.

Only spend time with those who appreciate and respect you. If your time and energy are misspent on the wrong relationships, or on too many activities that force you to neglect your good relationships, you can end up in a tedious cycle of fleeting friendships, superficial romances, and a general sense of wondering why you always seem to be chasing affection.

    8. Don’t be afraid to learn something new.

Learning something new is an excellent way to live life to the fullest – every day. When we know better, we live better. Education is self-education; those of us who take the time and initiative to pursue knowledge on their own time are the only ones who gain from it.

In conclusion, life is short, and we only have one shot at making the most of it. We need to reflect on what is important to us, and live our lives accordingly. It is never too late to start living life in a way that makes us feel fulfilled and happy. Because you only live once, make sure you do it right. Until we meet Alison again someday, rest in peace my friend.
