Ishan Kishan’s poor run in the ODIs continues as he failed to deliver in the first match against Australia at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday, March 17. The opener, who was lbw out by Marcus Stoinis for three runs, once again disappointed fans, who had high hopes after his double century in Bangladesh in December 2022. With regular captain Rohit Sharma set to return, Kishan is likely to warm the bench for the remaining two games against Australia. The hosts were reduced to 39/4 after 10.2 overs. The two teams will meet again for the second ODI in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, March 19.

Ishan Kishan Failed to Deliver for Team India

Ishan Kishan’s poor form in the ODI series against Australia has raised a lot of questions over his selection in the Indian cricket team. After his double century in Bangladesh in December 2022, Kishan was expected to perform well in the series against New Zealand and Australia. However, he failed to live up to the expectations of the fans and experts.

In the first ODI against Australia at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 17, Kishan was dismissed for just three runs. He was lbw out by Marcus Stoinis in the second over. The ball hit his pad after an inswinger from Stonis, and he was beaten on the inside edge. The 24-year-old reviewed the dismissal, but replays showed that there was no bat involved. The hawk-eye confirmed that the ball would have crashed onto the middle stump.

Fans were disappointed with Kishan’s performance in the ODI. One fan even wrote on Twitter, “Yaar yeah Ishan Kishan kab tak Mumbai Indians quota pee khelega? (Guys, how long Ishan Kishan will play for Team India on the basis of Mumbai Indians’ quota?)”

This is not the first time Kishan has failed to deliver in the ODI. He returned with figures of 5, 8* and 17 in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand in January. His inconsistency has raised concerns over his selection in the Indian cricket team.

Here are some of the other Twitter reactions:

“Ishan Kishan performs in one innings and dead as a duck in the next 10.”

“Ishan Kishan is an over-rated fraud. Agree.”

“When you play with Ishan Kishan, you are already one batsman short.”

“Mayank is almost 20 times better than Ishan Kishan, if my math is correct.”

“Ishan Kishan is a reel batsman, not a real batsman. He just wants to attend with the tattoos, piercing, and all. All the time partying and stuff. Flop batsman.”

“Filter out Ishan Kishan’s ODI stats barring the 200, you will see a fraudster getting exposed.”

“It’s time for Sanju Samson to replace Ishan Kishan.”

It is clear that Kishan’s performance has not gone down well with the fans and experts. In Rohit Sharma’s absence, Kishan was expected to step up and deliver for the team. However, he failed to do that, and as a result, he is likely to warm the bench for the remaining two games against Australia. Regular captain Rohit Sharma will return for the next two ODIs after missing out on the opening game to attend the wedding function of his brother-in-law.

Apart from Kishan, the Indian cricket team had a dismal start to the first ODI. The hosts were reduced to 39/4 after 10.2 overs, with KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya at the crease. While Stonis provided the first breakthrough, Mitchell Starc got rid of Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shubman Gill. Starc has a third, as Shubman Gill is caught at point by Marnus.

On the other hand, a clinical bowling performance from Team India helped the hosts bundle out the visitors for 188 in 35.4 overs. Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj scalped three wickets each. Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja and stand-in captain Hardik Pandya bagged one each. Mitchell March starred with the bat for Australia, scoring 81 off 65 balls, including five sixes and 10 boundaries.

The two teams will next face off in the second ODI in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, March 19. It remains to be seen if Ishan Kishan gets another chance to prove himself in the series. However, his poor form has certainly raised concerns over his selection in the Indian cricket team.
